The cantankerous "Wildfire" which Mr. Hicks flew on several missions(B-17G Sr# 42-37845) lies at the bottom of the English channel.
It was shot down 12 June 1944.Pilot was Lt. Vernon B. Guthrey. Badly damaged aircraft was ditched in Channel.Of crew 2 were KIA, and 8 rescued and returned to base. Number is correct. There were extra crew aboard.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hicks, but have talked with him a couple of times on phone ,and exchanged email with him.
I build scale model planes, and like to use markings for a particular aircraft. Hoping to find info on Mr Hicks B-17,I did some research and had found he was flying a B-17G Sr#42-31725 named "Lil Genny" AKA "Casa De Embriagos" when shot down over Tweelbacke.Article in Macon telegraph started me on this. Have found b&w photo of this plane which shows port side with "Li'l Genny".I assume "Casa de Embriagos" is on starboard side.I am pretty sure aircraft color was olive drab over gray, but have no idea what color nose art might have been.
I didn't realize Mr Hicks had a Blog Site until today.
It is very good . I have some emails from him describing being shot down, some of his POW experiences, liberation by Gen. Patton etc.
I feel it an honor to have been able to talk with Mr. Hicks.
